A living space for mom and dad

Customer Issues
In anticipation of their home becoming a multigenerational household, these homeowners wanted to create an in-law apartment in their unfinished basement. Their desire was to create an apartment featuring high end finishes and universal design elements. The end goal was to have an easy to maintain space for comfortable independent living.

Bel Air Construction Solutions
The Bel Air Construction design and production teams carefully planned the best utilization of space. The previously underutilized space is now a spacious apartment that consists of a bedroom, study, living area, kitchen, full bath and a powder room.

This complex project required the creation of a new exterior entrance to the space, the reconfiguration and movement of multiple utilities and the establishment of an emergency egress to meet code requirements.

To keep this below ground space light bright colors and finishes are used throughout. Entry to the space is through a wide sliding glass door that allows natural light into the kitchen and living area. Additional lighting is provided by dimmable recessed LED fixtures. Contrasting with the over brightness of the space is warm wood toned Mohawk Solid Tech Luxury Vinyl Plank flooring.

Comfort conditioning is provided by a high efficiency 3-zone variable volume system.

Clean, sharp line shaker style white cabinetry is used in the kitchen, bath and powder room. All countertops are luxurious and sleek MSI Calcutta Delios quartz with a white background interwoven with delicate bronze and gold veins.

Brushed nickel plumbing fixtures from the Kohler Bancroft and Bellera families are used in the kitchen, bath and powder room.

The bathroom features a curbless entry shower with a 6-foot-long seat. The Kohler Bancroft shower system includes both a handheld and wall mounted shower head.

All tile in the bath is installed over Schluter substrates, a bonded, watertight assembly which eliminates the risk of failures due to water and vapor penetration.
